Daith Piercing Guide

What is a daith piercing?

A daith piercing is a type of ear piercing that passes through the innermost cartilage fold of the ear, above the ear canal. It is usually located close to the tragus and is considered a cartilage piercing. The daith piercing has become increasingly popular in recent years and is known for its unique and distinctive appearance.

The daith piercing has become increasingly popular in recent years, in part because it is said to have potential therapeutic benefits for migraine sufferers.

TYPES

LABRET

Labret studs are a great option for a daith piercing. They are a popular choice for many piercings because the ball can be easily screwed on and off from the front. They are designed with a flat back, which can be more comfortable to wear, especially when sleeping.

BARBELL

Barbells can be used in a daith piercing. However, it is important to choose the appropriate size and length of the barbell for your daith piercing to ensure proper healing and comfort. See the size guide below for the right barbell size for your daith piercing.

SMALL HOOPS

Small hoops, such as captive bead rings, can be suitable for a daith piercing. However, it's important to choose the appropriate size and gauge for your individual daith. It's also recommended to wait until the piercing is fully healed before changing to a hoop to avoid irritation or discomfort.

SEGMENT RINGS

Segment rings are another type of jewellery that can be used in a daith piercing. These rings are circular and consist of two parts that can be twisted apart, making them easy to insert and remove. They also have a seamless look, which can look really nice in a daith piercing.

SIZES

DAITH PIERCING SIZES

When selecting jewellery for a daith piercing, it's important to consider the size and shape of the piercing. The daith is a relatively small area, so choosing a smaller piece of jewellery can be more comfortable and less likely to cause irritation or discomfort. While we offer a large selection of cartilage jewellery, not all of it will be suitable for a daith piercing.

Daith piercings typically take about 3-9 months to fully heal. During the healing process, it is important to clean the piercing regularly with a saline solution and avoid touching it with dirty hands. It is also recommended to avoid sleeping on the side of the piercing and to avoid activities that may cause trauma to the area, such as contact sports.

Some people report feeling a sharp pinch or pressure during the piercing process, while others may only feel a slight discomfort. However, the daith piercing is located in a sensitive area of the ear and may be more painful than other types of ear piercings. It is important to have the piercing done by a professional piercer to ensure proper placement and reduce the risk of complications.

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water to prevent infection.

  2. Gently twist the daith earring back and forth to loosen any crust that may have formed around the piercing.

  3. If the daith jewellery is a captive bead ring, use your fingers or pliers to remove the ball from the ring.

  4. If it is a curved barbell or a circular barbell, unscrew the ball on one end of the jewellery.

  5. Slowly and gently slide the barbell out of the piercing hole. If you experience any resistance or pain, stop and seek professional help from a piercer or healthcare provider.

  6. Once the daith earring is out, clean the area with a saline solution or a mild soap and water.

  7. If you don't plan to reinsert the jewellery immediately, keep the piercing hole clean and dry to prevent infection.

It's important to note that if you're having difficulty removing a daith earring or experiencing any pain or discomfort, it's best to seek the help of a professional piercer or healthcare provider.

Before changing a daith piercing for the first time, it's important to ensure that it has fully healed. The healing time for a daith piercing is typically around 3-6 months. Once you're confident that the piercing has healed, you can follow these steps to change the daith earring:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water to prevent any bacteria from entering the piercing.

  2. Sterilise your new jewelry by cleaning it with rubbing alcohol.

  3. Gently twist and remove the current jewelry from your daith piercing, following the steps in the guide above.

  4. Take the new daith earring and carefully insert it into the piercing, making sure to follow the natural curve of your ear.

  5. Secure the new jewellery in place by gently twisting it until it feels tight, but be careful not to overtighten it as this can cause irritation and discomfort.

It's important to note that if you experience any pain or discomfort during changing your daith jewellery, it's best to stop and seek advice from a professional piercer.

At the moment is no scientific evidence to support the claim that daith piercings can help alleviate migraines. The idea behind this claim is that the daith piercing is located in a specific pressure point that can help reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. However, although some people swear their daith piercing has helped their migraines, there has not been enough research to support this claim. You should also be aware, like with any piercing, that there is a risk of getting your ears pierced and proper aftercare should be prioritised to ensure the best outcome.
