Labret Piercing Guide

What is a labret piercing?

Labret studs are a type of jewellery can be used in quite a few different piercings. Labret earrings consist of a bar with a flat plate at one end and a removable top at the other. The top can be easily removed and interchanged, with lots of designs to choose from.

Labret piercings have gained popularity due to their straightforward and comfortable design, making them an excellent choice for those seeking a versatile and customizable piercing.

In this guide we will go through the various types and sizes you can buy, and which will work for you.

TYPES

EXTERNALLY THREADED

The standard type of labret, with the threading located on the outside of the bar, threading inside the top. These labrets are ideal for fully healed piercings to avoid causing damage. For new piercings, it's best to opt for an internally threaded labret to minimize the risk of irritation or scraping.

INTERNALLY THREADED

Internally threaded labrets have the threading attached to the ball and inside the bar, making it smoother and easier to insert and screw on the top. These labrets are an excellent choice, especially for piercings that are not fully healed yet, as they reduce the risk of irritation or scraping.

THREADLESS

These are a unique type of labret that don't have any threading. Instead, the tops have a pin that needs to be bent inside the bar to secure it in place. This involves inserting the top of the jewellery into the bar and then bending the pin inside the bar to secure it in place.

PUSH-FIT

Push-fit labrets typically feature a bioflex bar. The pin of these labrets has small ridges that help to keep them in place. However, it's important to note that push-fit labrets are known for having a less secure fit compared to other types of labrets.

Typically, a labret piercing can take anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks to fully heal. However, it's important to continue cleaning and caring for your piercing even after it has fully healed to prevent infection or other issues.

  • To avoid introducing bacteria to the piercing area, make sure to regularly wash your hands with clean water and unscented soap.

  • For vertical labret piercings, keeping your mouth clean is also important, so use an antiseptic, non-alcoholic mouthwash regularly. It's recommended to do this when you wake up, before bed, and after every meal.

  • While the piercing is healing, avoid submerging it in water or swimming. Instead, opt for taking showers.

  • Bacteria can easily transfer from your clothes, sheets, and blankets to your piercing area, so make sure to keep them clean.

  • To prevent infection, try to avoid touching your mouth or face with unclean hands. This may take some practice to get used to.

  • Soaking the piercing area in a solution of 1/8 cup of sea salt dissolved in 1 cup of warm water for at least 5 minutes a day can help with healing. Afterwards, pat the area dry with a clean towel.

  • Using a saline spray is a good alternative to the salt soak for keeping the area clean.

Like any type of body piercing, vertical labret piercings come with some risks. However, when done properly by a professional piercer and with proper aftercare, they can be safe. It's important to choose a reputable piercer who uses sterilised equipment and follows proper piercing techniques to minimise the risk of infection or other complications. It's also important to follow proper aftercare instructions, which may include cleaning the piercing with a saline solution and avoiding certain activities or substances until the piercing is fully healed.

The pain level associated with a vertical labret piercing can vary depending on individual pain tolerance and the specific technique used by the piercer.

Some people report feeling only mild discomfort, while others may experience more significant pain during the piercing process. The vertical labret piercing involves piercing through the lip vertically, which can be a sensitive area, and the process typically involves some pressure and discomfort. However, the pain is usually brief and typically subsides quickly after the piercing is complete. As with any body piercing, it's important to carefully consider the potential pain and discomfort before getting a vertical labret piercing and to choose a reputable piercer who can help minimise any pain or discomfort during the procedure.

To clean a labret piercing, follow these steps:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with clean water and unscented soap.

  2. For tongue piercings, rinse your mouth with antiseptic, non-alcoholic mouthwash.

  3. Using a cotton swab or pad, apply a saline solution or a mild soap solution to the piercing.

  4. Gently rotate the labret stud or ring to allow the solution to penetrate the piercing.

  5. Rinse the piercing with clean water.

  6. Pat the piercing dry with a clean towel or let it air dry.

Repeat this process twice a day, or as instructed by your piercer, until the piercing is fully healed. Avoid using alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or harsh antibacterial soaps, as these can irritate the piercing and slow down the healing process. Additionally, avoid touching the piercing with dirty hands, and avoid swimming or submerging the piercing in water until it is fully healed.
